Bridge1 Bridge2 Bridge3 Bridge4

Spittal Bridge – at the junction of the Broad, the Croft Lane and Nordan bank; it has two small arches and is of stone.

The bridge crosses a stream, one of several drains that cross the pastures between the Ludlow road and Eyton. This stream flows across The Broad, Mile End and Portley Moor forming the Borough Boundary, to join Ridgemoor Brook.

Blacklock records: “Spital Bridge, which has two arches, is close to the Pool one mile along the North Road, where it marks the farthest limit of the Borough northwards. It has also been sometimes called Postel Bridge, Spittel Bridge, and Spitalhouse Bridge; obtaining its name from being near to the ancient Hospital of the Benedictine Monastery.”

The Accounts of the Borough Chamberlain record: “1661. pd. for mendinge the spittell house bridge 00 15 6”

Townsend states “Spytell Bridge, the boundary of the Borough towards Ludlow, on the North, so called from the Hospital of the Priory, which is situated close beside it.”
